Saturday was a beautiful day for an ‘A-’ ride starting in Greenlawn and led by Lou. A perfect day to hit a few hills on the way out past Oysterbay to Centre Island. We didn’t see the piano man but went past the gate to his house. The main music on the ride was Karen G. bursting into song in between her sweep duties of calling “Car Back!” Look out for John bombing the hills. Lou sets a great pace and has some unique back road routes (rats maze?!)

Gold Coast Video

Speaking of Lou, check out the promo video he made to show off some of the fun of the Gold Coast Ride (click for video). And if you like what you see, you can go to the website, check out all the details and even register online. (click for Gold Coast details) The ride is a classic tour of the north shore with big houses, great sound views and a selection of ride lengths to suit every level of rider.

Lancaster Ride

WEEKEND OF AUGUST 18th and 19th 2012

Our annual Lancaster Covered Bridge Ride is now planned. For the new people, this is a ride with fellow cyclists from all over the tri‐state area which our club has been involved with for the past eight years. It is sponsored by the Lancaster Bicycle Club. The ride is at you own pace as is mileage. You choose the mileage thus your own pace when signing up either on the internet or in person at the start. The $160 price for a two day bike adventure INCLUDING room and board is a great deal (per person – share a room).

Lou has negotiated a special rate for our members
The Bicycle Clubs will be staying at Mill Stream Country Inn Saturday and Sunday nights, 18-19 August 2012. The Club will be dining at the Bird-In-Hand Family Restaurant on Saturday and at Miller’s Smorgasbord on Sunday, all of which (except gratuities) is included in a special rate of $315 per room for the entire time. Free Breakfast at the hotel.
Lou has reserved 15 rooms for our group at the Millstream Country Inn, 170 Easbrook Rd (RT#896), SMOKETOWN, PA 17576. (see what tripadvisor has to say)
PHONE: 1-800-355-1143
YOU MUST ADVISE THE RESERVATION DESK THAT YOU ARE WITH THE CYCLING GROUP TO GET THIS PACKAGE AND SPECIAL PRICING!!!

Start is just down the road from the Motel.

The cut-off is July 1st. OR 2600 cyclists. Last year the ride was ‘booked’ before the July 1st Deadline so register ASAP if you plan to go using the link below and save $10 dollars:

Remember to get here as close to 7 as possible – the pizza goes pretty fast and you don’t want to miss out.

Today (April 1st) was the first official club rides. The “A” crew did a trip to Sayville with Leader John and Sweep Scott. Doug power-tapped his way up the minor hills (it’s a pretty flat route) and Karen (other Karen, not club secretary Karen) filled us in on how awesome it is to do triathlons and adventure tours in New Zealand!

Hope to see you at the club meeting Wednesday night.

Yes, the Huntington Bicycle Club “official” club led rides start April 7 at 9:00 AM. However, don’t wait for April when the weather is good in March. Last weekend, fifty or so riders met at Smith Street in Greenlawn. (Note: the photo above was taken before the full swarm of riders descended) A policeman happened to be on hand to be sure no one got too crazy. We broke into three different groups and had a great day. The “A-” group made their way to Glen Cove catching a few of the north shore hills, had a bagel at the Cove deli, and took the more direct route back. Heading down Stillwell is nice reward on the way home.

If your bike needs a minor tuneup or major repairs, get them done now, so that you can join the fun. I was told that superglue can fix small cuts in your tire, but this flap on the left may be beyond a dab of glue??

If the roads are dry there will be plenty of riders ‘unofficial’ this coming weekend, and the Club rides kick off the weekend after that. See you on the road.

Call to order: 7:40 PM
Welcome-from President Tracy
New members: Jenna, Larry, Ed, John
Adam gave an update on the racing team. The racing team jerseys and bibs were available tonight.
Gold Coast- Mike Kalachman has taken it over. It will be 7/29/12 in order to not conflict with the Mansion Ride
President Tracy introduced a new agenda item: “How are we doing”? –inviting questions and comments from the members.
A question about unloading excess equipment: use our list serve or our facebook.
Ride Leader’s report- Official rides start on April 7 (Saturday) New leaders are invited John showed our club jerseys for sale-they can be ordered from the web page
Treasurer’s report- the holiday party was the latest expense incurred.
Membership- Sal reported we have over 200 members. Cards will not be sent if you use Pay-Pal. Sal also said he is going to organize a ride though NYC the day of the 5 Boro, but on different routes. Look for info on the web page.
Jay- mentioned the LAB (League of Amercian Bicyclists), and all the info about riding it can offer.
Featured speaker: Arne Johnson

Looking at bike accident statistics-most occur from 4 PM-midnight
Most accidents for cyclists are the riders who fall. As a rider, we must be proactive, and keep vigilant. Concentrate on your riding. Look out for road hazards. Many accidents occur at intersections, where there are many simultaneous events. Keep a lookout for cars. Try leaving more space between you and the next cyclist. Some things to think about as we ride:
1) Focus on where/what is going on
2) Control the distance between you and the next rider.
3) Communicate with the other riders.
4) Pre-act before you re-act!
5) Let’s all ride safely
What to do about the plethora of pot holes: take pix of them with your cell phone, and send to the towns. Smithtown is not very receptive to repairing these hazards.
Ride leaders should start each ride with a reminder about proper cycling practices, including ride etiquette. The use of a mirror was encouraged (either on your bike or on your glasses) Ride a well tuned up bike.
PAY Attention!
50/50-$25- Carmine
Bicycling T-Shirts- Jack, John, Larry
Beer Mugs- Bruce, , Scott, Angel, Mark
Terry Hat:

Respectfully Submitted,

Please join us for this first important meeting of the 2012 riding season. In addition to normal business and discussion about events of the new year, Arne Johnson, our Safety Chairman, will review cycling safety and outline the League of American Bicyclists “SMART CYCLING” program.

We all dream of cycling down quiet country roads, but the reality of our weekly rides is heavily traveled multi-lane roads, poor pavements and road markings, dangerous intersections, and less than friendly pedestrians and drivers. Let’s get off to a good start this year by incorporating safe practices in every ride.

As always, gourmet pizza and cold drinks will be served.

Since it was a drizzly Saturday, instead of riding on the road I pulled out the old trek mountain bike and headed off to toward the gas line trails. After cutting through behind Bellrose and into the VA woods I was surprised to find a fully cleaned single track trail. I eventually ended up at the trailhead. The trail stars at a small parking area near the back entrance of the VA on Middleville road. The trail is rated ‘advanced’ by C.L.I.M.B. and is clean, not too many roots and well marked. There are some swoops, humps, and logs. Part of the trail was named Anaconda and another portion Sea Monster. Both had plenty of twists and turns. Want to go off road? This is worth a visit. The postings from CLIMB in the parking area indicate that the trail is 5 miles long.
