Project Renaissance is having a bike safety event for National Bike Safety Month
on Saturday, May 1st from 12pm-4pm at all six Kmart stores in Long Island participating in Project Renaissance
* We would love Huntington Bicycle Club to participate by
bringing two or three people to each store and teach children and families about bike safety, including proper equipment, use of helmets and the rules of the road.
* Families are also encouraged to bring their children’s
bike to their local Kmart store (we will also provide bikes for
children to participate) and the Huntington Bicycle Club can help
fit the children for bike helmets.
* The event will also include a child seat safety check so
that families are assured of their children’s safety.
* It would also be fun if Huntington Bicycle Club can help
run a bicycle challenge or course in which children can
participate.
* Bike Contest
* Kmart will be giving away one youth bike per store and
would love for Huntington Bicycle Club to participate in the
drawing by encouraging families to enter.
* Families may enter to win by filling out an entry form.
Drawings will be held around 4pm.
Doug Haluza rode the Connecticut River Double Century out of Northampton, MA on Sunday starting @ 6AM, pre ride the weather forecast was calling for cold and rain/snow showers. He carried a SPOT satellite tracker with him, position updates werebe posted approximately every 10 min to his public page.
Doug sent this report on his double century ride:
“FYI, the weather was OK–just a few nuisance showers, and no snow, but definitely cold enough for multiple layers of clothing. I got dropped after the 152 mi checkpoint, and finished about half an hour behind the leaders in 11:27. We set an event record century split at 5:16 (but the course may have been a little easier this year). The two guys I was riding with were both PBP veterans, and were past winners at the Saratoga 12h race, so it was a great experience for me. Hardly any traffic lights on the route, and minimal traffic, so we bascially hammered the first 50 mi to the checkpoint non-stop, then just very brief stops for food & water every 50 mi, with a few quick pit-stops to pee. It was a wild ride!”
Way to go Doug!
According to Jesus Hernandez - “The first Open Ride to Roslyn was a success. We had 15 riders and did a 58 miles ride. A teamwork effort helped the group to achieve an average speed of 19.6 mph. in a course that includes approx. 2,000 feet of climbing. Thanks to everybody who participated. If you started but did not complete this ride, thanks for your effort and continue to participate in open rides.”
