MINUTES of the May 4, 2010 meeting of the Huntington Bicycle Club

May 15th, 2010

Meeting called to order: 8:05 PM

After pizza, President Tony Barone lamented that many members are absent tonight.

1) Scott/Arch motioned to approve the minutes from the April meeting.

2) Gold Coast/July 11 – call for new volunteers- members should contact Tony about what they could do for this event.
Captains of the various rest stops, please contact Tony to insure every job is covered.
Some routes may need to be changed (specifically the part that uses Lloyd Harbor and Snake Hill Rd, which will be taken out) Information as to what jobs are needed to be filled will be emailed and placed on the webpage.

3) Treasurer – net gain for dues income, some active.com income for the Gold Coast, and some refreshments expenditures.
4) Ride Leader’s report – Rich explained how the posting of the rides is done.
Rides are posted by the ride captain for each level. Rich said he wanted to add some more remote rides.

5) Web page - Arch asked for pictures of rides (cell phones?) and anything that might be of interest to the members.

Charlie spoke about the Tour De Cure on behalf of the American Diabetes Assoc. needing marshalls (they help with directions and smoothness of the ride) for the ride-Saturday June 12, starting at Riverhead. Go to diabetes.org for more information as well.

Angelo Palmeri – speaking about getting younger members into the club. Would like to do community bike workshops-to recycle bikes and give them to needy community members.

On May 19, 2010 the Ride of Silence

May 15th, 2010
Ride of Silence in honor of those who have been killed or injured while bicycling.

The Ride of Silence is a FREE ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.
More details about the ride on the Suffolk Bicycle Riders Association Website

May 1st Event – Project Renaissance – Family Bike Event at Kmart

    April 21st, 2010

Project Renaissance is having a bike safety event for National Bike Safety Month
on Saturday, May 1st from 12pm-4pm at all six Kmart stores in Long Island participating in Project Renaissance

    * We would love Huntington Bicycle Club to participate by
bringing two or three people to each store and teach children and families about bike safety, including proper equipment, use of helmets and the rules of the road.
    * Families are also encouraged to bring their children’s
bike to their local Kmart store (we will also provide bikes for
children to participate) and the Huntington Bicycle Club can help
fit the children for bike helmets.
    * The event will also include a child seat safety check so
that families are assured of their children’s safety.
    * It would also be fun if Huntington Bicycle Club can help
run a bicycle challenge or course in which children can
    participate.

    * Bike Contest

    * Kmart will be giving away one youth bike per store and
would love for Huntington Bicycle Club to participate in the
drawing by encouraging families to enter.
    * Families may enter to win by filling out an entry form.
Drawings will be held around 4pm.

    Doug did a double century!

    April 21st, 2010

Doug Haluza rode the Connecticut River Double Century out of Northampton, MA on Sunday starting @ 6AM,  pre ride the weather forecast was calling for cold and rain/snow showers.  He carried a SPOT satellite tracker with him, position updates werebe posted approximately every 10 min to his public page.

Doug sent this report on his double century ride:

“FYI, the weather was OK–just a few nuisance showers, and no snow, but definitely cold enough for multiple layers of clothing. I got dropped after the 152 mi checkpoint, and finished about half an hour behind the leaders in 11:27. We set an event record century split at 5:16 (but the course may have been a little easier this year). The two guys I was riding with were both PBP veterans, and were past winners at the Saratoga 12h race, so it was a great experience for me. Hardly any traffic lights on the route, and minimal traffic, so we bascially hammered the first 50 mi to the checkpoint non-stop, then just very brief stops for food & water every 50 mi, with a few quick pit-stops to pee. It was a wild ride!”

    Way to go Doug!

Are you ready for “Open”? (avg. 19-20mph)

    April 13th, 2010
    Tour de France anyone?
Mel Roldan informs us that the AA group has expanded to the point where they’re adding a new ride classification known as the “Open Category.”
Pace guidelines for these two groups are impressive given that they are measured by average overall pace for the entire ride.
    ~~ AA – 17-18 mph overall average
    ~~ Open – 19-20 mph overall average

According to Jesus Hernandez - “The first Open Ride to Roslyn was a success. We had 15 riders and did a 58 miles ride. A teamwork effort helped the group to achieve an average speed of 19.6 mph. in a course that includes approx. 2,000 feet of climbing. Thanks to everybody who participated. If you started but did not complete this ride, thanks for your effort and continue to participate in open rides.”

April 3 – HBC rides start! View ride calendar online

    March 14th, 2010
The April 3rd start of the HBC riding season is almost upon us. With the lousy weather we’ve all been having (that includes Florida), I’m sure everyone is raring to go.
As promised at a 2009 club meeting, in 2010 we’ve made it easier and less cumbersome for all to view club rides. In the place of confusing monthly and weekly e-mails that contain hard to download attachments, we’re making use of a redesigned and easy to follow calendar on our website (http://www.hbcli.org/rideslist/current_ride_listlist.php). This calendar will be the single source for all ride information. Access to the calendar does not require a login code, and it will be updated as necessary.

April listings are already flowing in to the calendar from the various group ride captains, so take an early look and get ready for some great rides in 2010.

Check the HBC blog for all his information.
    5) Comments were made that the Newsletter/blog should announce the next meeting-time and place. Some people came in February, even though there was no meeting. Members are encouraged to use the ride forums on the web page more, to keep the lines of communication open.
    6)  Mike and Tracy volunteered to develop a design for a new club jersey.
    7)  Members are encouraged to go to the State Bike Trail web site, and petition the state to commence paving the Port Jeff to Wading River trail. The $$ has been allocated for this 17 mile off road trail, but LIPA is holding up the process.
