The Huntington Bicycle Club, NY

Date: 4/27/2025
Subject: Folks on Spokes April, 2025
From: Huntington Bicycle Club

              A Message From the President

May is approaching, along with warmer weather and earlier ride starts.
In May, all rides start at 8:30AM. This applies to the weekday rides from Breezy and Bethany as well.
If you haven't ventured out to ride yet this year, below is a list of necessities for every ride (whether with a group or alone)

             Some exciting Club news!
Saturday, May 3rd is Huntington Family Earth Day. To celebrate this event, and frankly to show the community what it means to ride a bicycle around here, we are having all of the scheduled rides go to this event. All rides will start at Smith Street with all of the rest stops at the Manor Farm Park on Manor Road. Below is a list of the vendors, activities and speakers scheduled to be at the farm. HBC's Gold Coast Chair, Steve Labiner, will be at a table with Club and Gold Coast information.
What you need to do: Sign up for one of the scheduled rides on Saturday, May 3rd.
WEAR AN HBC JERSEY (doesn't matter what year) Let's have a presence at this event!
We need to show the politicians and community leaders that they need to make the continued upkeep of roads and respectful driving a high priority in Huntington.
We are inviting people to come and try a ride with the Club on
Saturday, May 10th. That will be advertised at the Earth Day event.
Details to follow at the meeting, May 6th.
HBC is ending Groups.io email. Look below for an explanation of this and alternative ways of communicating within the club.
Time is passing and the deadline for ordering a Gold Coast East jersey for the event is fast approaching.  Jerseys must be ordered by May 20th if you want to wear it on the ride.
There is a new RWGPS  Access Token code (only for the premium account discount)
Log onto the Website, go to the menu, go to Club, then Documents and RWGPS.
An Access Token document will explain how to get the discount.

The Club Social Media Chair job is still open!
The American Diabetes Tour de Cure is on May 31st. Please join the HBC Team. Details below.
The next Club meeting is Tuesday, May 6th.
Along with bestowing two awards, invited speakers:
Hal Tarry, will be talking about the repaving (and widening) of the Landing Avenue bridge over the Nissequogue river that is in the near future. Smithtown residents can notify their local politicians and voice support for widening that entire stretch of road from the bridge up to Edgewood.
Doug Haluza will be showing pictures from recent cross country journeys.
I hope to see many of you Saturday, May 3rd wearing your HBC Jerseys!
  Karen

At the most recent Executive Board Meeting, it was voted on to drop the email carrier, Groups.io.
HBC has been using the Groups.io email system since October 2019 when Yahoo changed how its email group worked. Groups.io served as a method for members to communicate. In January 2021 HBC launched our new website with ClubExpress.
Since that time, we now have email through the Forums for the various ride levels, ride leaders, Executive Board etc... These are accessed by going to your profile or when you renew your membership.
Now there is the Mobile App with a Chat feature.
We have the built-in ClubExpress email system used to send emails to all members and non-members in our database. This is how you get this Newsletter and any Club reminders.
Currently, Groups.io only has 114 members. We have a total of 310 club members.  Also, very few people have used Groups.io. last year and so far, this year. Look at this screen shot below (with a microscope) of the Groups.io Homepage. It shows the 114 members, and the number of emails sent month by month.

It makes sense to have one main way of communicating. If you want to email somebody you rode with, it's very easy to do. Using a Forum is a guaranteed way of reaching out to other riders.
It is too confusing for members to have different communicating systems.
At this time, members can concentrate on the Email Forums, Chat on the Mobile App, and the built-in email system.

Thanks, Malachy

HBC Club Meeting Minutes – 4/1/2025

7:30 p.m. Karen called the meeting to order

Minutes from last meeting - John made a motion to approve and Malachy seconded

Pam to change to “Meri” rather than “Mary” in March Club Meeting minutes and finalize

Anthony presented the Financials as of 4/1/2025 - Generally, business as usual on the financial side

Karen announced jerseys are available for purchase during this meeting

Trust for Public Land - spearheading the Greenway connected Karen with the people running Earth Day in Huntington on May 3, 2025 Manor Farm Park 210 Manor Road; Karen asked that all rides leave from the Park and return to the Park; free shredding at the event and at the Harborfields Library that day

Social Media Chair - Karen made a plea for a Social Media Chair; someone that is into Facebook would be really good; also Instagram and Strava; also send out weekly highlights on Thursday to show what is going to be happening on the upcoming weekend.  Ride with GPS is not part of this - Larry manages this.  Malachy asked for people to let him know if they are interested or know someone who would be interested.

Greater New York Tour de Cure - James Geraghty - the ride is May 31, 2025 and we can sign up on the HBC website.  Cause is the American Diabetes Association.  Moved locations to Port Washington 14-, 30- and 62-mile routes.  These are our old Gold Coast routes.  They use a third party to get the permits, which is what we had an issue with. $10.00 entry fee but if put in coupon code THANKYOU25, do not pay the $10.00.  When you register, everyone is asked to have a goal of $250

John Greene - Ride leader points are on the wall during the meeting.  All meet at the Farm on May 3rd and maybe all rides go in waves to the same location (e.g., Farmingdale).

Sal Levy - 5 new members this month; total has dropped a little since it is the end of March and March is the biggest month for renewing memberships; 306 total members including the 5 new members.  We do not offer the option to auto-renew.  Get an email reminder and have to go in and actively renew.  Can also renew early if click on profile; Apple Pay and Google Pay are new options for payment of dues.

John reminded everyone to look at Classified Ads on the website - lots of bikes for sale and accessories

Steve Labiner - Gold Coast ride is 7/14/2025; registration is open with discounted price between now and 6/8/2025; $40 for members; $70 for non-members; if they join the club, they get the member price.  Looking for sponsorships for the ride.  Karen - Volunteer opportunities for the ride on the calendar under Gold Coast East 2025; four ways to get to the volunteer - news article, GC page, calendar; have to log into the website before signing up to volunteer; Expand and then click the “Volunteer” green button; have to select T-shirt size; have to “Add this Volunteer” and click “Done Volunteering” and “Complete and Save” - get an email confirmation, so if do not receive one, then did not complete the process.  Can sign up other people as well.  2 of the sponsors are bringing people for Harborfields High School.  We will also be sending out emails to get volunteers.

Steve Finkelstein - Professor Pedals - Enterprise to teach people to ride a bike.  Have expanded to work with Special Needs Kids and Adults to teach them to learn to ride.  Approach is teacher/child not parent/child relationship.  Work progressively starting off the bike then on the bike; slow method.  Generally 1-3 lessons are needed; 1-1/2 hours but many special needs kids cannot focus for the 1-1/2 hours so do 1-hour lesson.  Asked for people who would like to become instructors from the Club.  Flexible hours.  Online booking system.  Steve trains all the trainers.

Malachy walked everyone through loading the new ClubExpress app to their smartphones and discussed the Chat feature.

Karen showed video - Peak Performance Package - Dexafit - in Stonybrook and Bellmore; package includes 2 Dexascans and 2 VO2 masks; $319.00 for all 4 tests; test at beginning and end of Spring training; they use Zwift bikes

Anthony - trains on Zwift bike during the winter months; he will do a presentation in the Fall on the Zwift software

Outlive by Peter Attia - great book about living longer

Hugh Parkhurst won the 50/50

Karen , performing with her Quintet- Sunday, Northport Library 2:00 p.m. free!

Hugh Parkhurst moved to adjourn the meeting at 8:50 p.m.
