A Message from the President
July was a very eventful month for the Club. Foremost, was the successful Gold Coast East Tour on July 13th. I define "successful" as, no accidents! The rides all went out, even though the weather was misty in the morning. It was not overly hot, which made riding the long distances more comfortable. Reviews of the event were mostly very positive. Riders were most complimentary of the Rest Stops and especially the road markings.
A special award was given to two of the Road Markers due to their clarity and great placement: Arne Johnson and Bruce Wessinger received this award at the Volunteers Party, July 19th.
Leading up to the Gold Coast, Nina Kuscsik, world famous marathon runner, passed away on June 8th. Her funeral and memorial were July 12th. Nina was an HBC member and rode with the Club until 2 years ago. The slide show at her memorial had many photos of her riding in an HBC Club jersey. Those who attended said that she had great memories of her connections with the HBC.
The Crankin, led by Bob McLaughlin, organized two really special events that are noteworthy to all: First, June 29, a ride around Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens that stopped at the Reflecting Pool memorial at the site of the former World Trade Center. Second, July 26, a ride from Roslyn to the Queens Velodrome. This included a stop in Bayside to revisit leader, Bob's boyhood home and of course pertinent information about his adolescence! Riding the Velodrome was really fun, and it is in great condition.
Larry led rides to some really interesting destinations: The Empire trail from Brewster to New Paltz on July 4th, and parts of the Harlem River Rail trail and its surrounding area on the 26th. Both rides were very favorably enjoyed.
As always, keep looking at the Calendar for ride postings and updates.
Looking ahead, there will be a special speaker at the next Club meeting on August 6th: Dr. Michael Dannenberg, dermatologist, who will speak about Safe Skin care for Cyclists.
The AAA organized and South Huntington Public Library sponsored Bike Rodeo will be on Saturday, September 20th from 10AM to 2PM. Sign up for a job on the website. Many will be needed to do preparatory work as well as working that day. Beforehand, marking the courses. Wait, maybe the award winning Road Markers will be available!
Check it out on the Calendar, please.
See you on the road or on August 6th,
Karen |
