Ride Categories

The following chart shows the HBC Ride  Max Speed on the Flats, in mph, and the Category Description

The following chart is a guideline for HBC group ride categories. Ride leaders use these guidelines when planning their rides. If you are new to group ability until you have more experience riding with the club. Please remember it's much better to start with a ride that is too easy than to struggle through a ride that is too hard. Be aware that on some rides, riders will push the pace faster than the average speed listed for that ride. This will depend on which riders sign-up for that ride.
Always check who has signed-up for the ride by clicking the Registrants button in the Event Calendar, Ride Details. This may help you decide which ride to go on.
The faster the average speed, the higher the level of group-riding skills that is required to ensure that rides remain safe.  Some rides may be more appropriate than others for you to learn the skills needed to enjoy riding safely.  Ride leaders will be happy to give you details regarding what is expected of you on rides.  Please contact the ride leader if it is your first ride at that level or if you are unsure what to expect.

HBC Forums

Since the fall of 2023 we changed our email hosting from GoDaddy to ClubExpress, our Forums now use an email address for postings. The Executive Board has been using this method on a regular basis for their Forum and it has been proven to be very easy and effective to use. It is like a separate email group.
Basically, all you have to do in order to post in a Forum, is send an email to the Forum email address. You can still go to the Forum on the website as well, but that is no longer required for posting or replying to a post. You will not have to log onto the Website in order to send an email to the Forum members.
The purpose of these Forums is to create easier communication just for the riders of that particular Forum.
If you Opt-in to join one or more of these Forums, you will be able to receive, reply to, and send emails to the group. No one else in the club will see these emails.

Obviously, this is only effective if Riders take advantage of this option.
You can go to your Profile and set your Forum Preferences and Forum Membership to join most of these Forums.

Or let the webmaster know if you would like to join a Forum by emailing him directly any time at:
webmaster@hbcli.org

NOTE: You must be a member of the Forum to use these Forum email addresses.

HBC E-Bike Policy

Ebike

The terms e-bike and electric bike are being applied to a wide variety of bicycles that contain an electric motor.  The motor provides assistance either when the rider is pedaling or via a throttle.

HBC will not permit e-bikes with throttles (aka Class 2 e-bikes) on club rides.  Our insurance will not cover losses arising from the use of these bikes.

If you are considering purchasing an e-bike for club rides, please make sure it is a class 1 or class 3 bike, as detailed in the LAB definitions below.

The League of American Bicyclists (the League), through which the HBC and almost all bicycle clubs get their insurance, has provided the following important information:

There has been some confusion relative to how the League’s liability insurance program applies to the use of electric bicycles during club activities. The purpose of this correspondence is to clarify the intent of the liability policy. It is important to note that coverage for electric bicycles for club activities has not changed, but there seems to be a need for clarification.

For the purposes of this communication, the definition of electric bicycle is consistent with the CPSC definition and the League’s position on electric bicycles:

  • Class 1 electric bicycle shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour.
  • Class 2 electric bicycle shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle and that is not capable of providing assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour.
  • Class 3 electric bicycle shall mean an electric bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches the speed of 28 miles per hour.

Based on the language from the insurance policy, losses arising from the use of a Class 2 electric bicycle would not be covered under the League’s club insurance program

Pothole Reporting

Everyone hates potholes.  They can turn a wonderful route into a miserable experience.  They cause blown tires and damaged wheels.  Every year club members are injured and hospitalized by pothole encounters.

Fortunately, all towns have a process to report potholes, and most of the time they will make repairs within a few days of a complaint.

So its up to us to file reports to have any chance of seeing this situation improve, especially with potholes that are dangerous to cyclists but not cars, such as deep narrow trenches, potholes in shoulders, broken up pavement, etc

For more details on how to report a Pothole, click this link:  Pothole Reporting
