            A Message From the President
                  Happy Autumn to all!
As of today, we've experienced just one cold wave, just to remind us that the layering process must begin soon!
Many great rides occurred during September. Quite a few HBC members participated in one of the 4 different routes of the Tour of The Hamptons, congratulations to the Massapequa Park Bicycle Club for this great effort.
Larry led a ride to Shelter Island and the North Fork that was scenic and yummy. More remotes from him in the future, check the  Ride calendar.
Up and coming is The Stony Brookside Bed and Bike Inn's annual event to sponsor CycleNY on October 9. All HBC members get a 10% discount on registration for the event. This is always a great ride, using the bike trails through Setauket as well as the scenic routes around Stony Brook. The food at the end is worth the ride!
Belated condolences to Rich Meyer on the passing of his son, who tragically took a spill on his bicycle, in July.
Nominations and Elections for Board members and the Executive Officers will all be held online. There will be an email sent out to all members with a link to the online Nominations before the October Meeting (10/11). The Board of Directors will be submitting a slate of officers. Members will be able vote for those nominated by the Board, nominate themselves or another member for each of the Officer and Board positions that are up for election. The results of the Nominations will be announced at the October meeting.
This weekend is October 1st, so ride departure times change to 8:30 AM.

Speaking of the October 11th meeting, Yishai Shapir will be the featured speaker. He will be talking about what all you guys live for: computer equipment, gadgets and every type of video/recording device you have ever wanted to know about.

Please sign up for it, so we know how much pizza to order.
      See you on the road!
  Karen

Tour of the Hamptons Century.
So what if there were 35 MPH headwinds returning from Montauk!
Century ride to Westhampton Beach.
Rain avoided, almost!

Safety is always a priority in group and solo cycling.
That being said, there was an article in Bicycling Magazine this month that named Hempstead Turnpike (Rte 24) the most dangerous road in the US for cyclists (and pedestrians). None of us would be shocked by that designation, and we certainly avoid that road except for crossing over it when necessary. Why is this road so treacherous to navigate? It promotes fast speeds for cars, at times has 8 wide lanes, and offers little support for cyclists and pedestrians. There are no bike lanes, and crosswalks are not timed for crossings.
The lead story concerned a 13 year old who was riding northbound across the Turnpike in Levittown and was hit and killed by a car going westbound. The most unfortunate observation about this is that it was not big news. It happens all too frequently on this road that stretches from Elmont to Farmingdale. At the point where the child was hit, the distance across the width of all the lanes is that of a basketball court.
What was really interesting in this piece was the history of the road from the prospective of a Long Islander, and how it grew from a bicycle friendly thoroughfare to a drag race destination.
    What can we do?
*Be visible, use front and rear lights, signal, be vigilant and ride correctly.
**Try not to be distracted, some conversations could wait until the break!
***The cars need to see us, and we need to ride lawfully.
