The Huntington Bicycle Club, NY

Date: 1/18/2023
Subject: Folks on Spokes, December, 2022
From: Huntington Bicycle Club

A Message from the President
As we have finished the 40th year of the Huntington Bicycle Club's
existence, there is much to reflect upon and be proud of!
After doing some investigation into the history of how the Club started,
it was fairly apparent that the original goal was to organize group rides
that were fun, scenic, challenging and socially engaging.
Learning and applying correct cycling techniques as well as proper maintenance
of the bicycles were stressed. One would hope that the Club is continuing those original goals.
Some relatively good news here: This past year, there were no serious injuries due to club cycling accidents. There were a couple of topples (sorry, Paul!), but none resulted in hospitalizations. Just always keep vigilant!
The inclusion of front and rear lights on bicycles has become fairly universal, as well as people using mirrors, which is great. What hasn't become universal are bells. Here is the NY State traffic law:
No person shall operate a bicycle unless it is equipped with a bell or other device
capable of giving a signal audible for a distance of at least one hundred feet, except
that a bicycle shall not be equipped with nor shall any person use upon a bicycle any siren or whistle.
Please install a bell on your handlebars

If you haven't already, sign the petition to lower the speed limits in certain municipalities. The objective is to reduce pedestrian and cyclist injuries due to the ever present high speeds of cars.

Great news, the Safe Streets Funding Bill has been  put into law. Localities across New York State will have increased funding to create bike lanes, widen roads and make safer markings in intersections.

          Club updates:
The Website has become all-encompassing for information about rides, events, equipment, RWGPS routes, meeting minutes,  Club activities, Social Media and the list goes on. There are 50 drop down tabs posted on the menu of the Main Website. All members can access these including the new Classified Ads and LAB news and Blogs.
When you have a chance, take a look at all of these. Pictures from the  many rides and events over the year are posted. Any member can add their own Club ride pictures to these.
We're excited to sponsor a Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, April 15th from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Harborfields Library. The informational meeting for parents and children will be at the library Tuesday, April 11 at 6:30 PM. A Bicycle Rodeo is a program to instruct children on the rules of the road, including proper riding and bicycle set up. It is designed and equipped by AAA. Look for a sign-up on the Website for members to help with this endeavor.
HBC welcomes new treasurer, Anthony Oliveri and new Board members, Sal Levy, who is also the Membership Chair, and Larry Denbaum, as the Ride Chairman. He is excited to initiate many different
ride destinations and meeting sites. See below for statements from John and Larry about this new organizational aspect to the Club.
We are still desperately in need of a Social Media Chairperson. Responsibilities include overseeing the HBC Facebook Page, Instagram, Strava, Blogs and the Classified Ads. It looks like a lot of work, but is not time consuming for someone familiar with these platforms. For a detailed job description, contact Malachy at:      malachyo@optonline.net
This year's "Gold Coast" will be quite different. Planning has already begun. Most routes will originate in Huntington and go east. Details to follow!
I hope everybody is enjoying the New Year, either riding outside when possible, or on the trainer!
Take care and see you on the road,
        Karen

The Year 2022 in Review

January-Commemorating the 40th year of the Huntington Bicycle Club's existence. Amazing that a Club that started as a "social group that liked to bicycle," turned into a "group of cyclists who like to socialize" Thank you to Jerry Wallens, for his history lessons and many, many pictures;  Don Auriema, for his constant presence; and Mark Sussman for sharing stories.

February-Speaking of founding members of the club, the Crankin' riders have begun posting their rides on our Website: Bethany Church on Mondays and Thursdays; Smith Street on Saturday. Check departure times as they do change depending upon the weather.

March-First in-person meeting since Covid, with the customary pizza. Big news was trying to get back to "normal": Some people are still hesitant to congregate either indoors or outdoors. The ride leader meeting, led by Sal, had a great turnout.
Many new options became available on the website, which continues to evolve. All of these links are offered to club members in good standing. Alex, from Bicycle playground was the special guest speaker for the meeting. Great to see all!

April-A riveting presentation by Jaime Swan, talking about his bicycle race support experiences in the one time Tour de Long Island  race here on Long Island in 1984.Talk of the 40th Gold Coast became a reality and members were introduced to the GC jersey (we still have some!)

May-Ben Serotta was the guest speaker, talking about, and showing proper bike fit, as well as historic pictures of Serotta bicycles over the years.

June-Gold Coast planning, finalizing procedures and arrangements. The sign up process for the various jobs
through the Website was very smooth and easy to monitor.

July-40th Anniversary Gold Coast Tour followed by the Gold Coast Tour party, so graciously hosted by Teri and Frank DelBalso.

August- additions to the Website:
Members can access all of the past Newsletters- Folks on Spokes; Minutes from all the meetings; Newsletters from LAB (the League of American Bicyclists) and their Blogs; Classified Ads can now be posted on the Website-this can be accessed by anybody viewing the Website; There are links to the HBC Facebook, Blog post and Twitter pages.

September-Many great rides occurred during this month: Club Century to Westhampton Beach (just beat the rain!); Quite a few HBC members participated in the MPBC's Tour of the Hamptons (kudos to them!); Larry led many great remotes over the course of the year including rides to Shelter Island and the North Fork, Peconic Metric Centuries and a number of rides on the Empire State trail upstate. Most of these rides had great food and drink!

October-Nominations for  Officers and Board members were submitted. Featured speaker at the meeting was
Yishai Shapir, who demonstrated how to download and create a RWGPS route. He shared a 7 minute video of his recent trip in Millerton (Harlem Valley Rail trail) and Massachusetts (Farm to Fork) with some other club members.

November-Club elections held online. Larry Denbaum was the featured speaker at this meeting. He showed pictures and spoke about his many remote rides. He is the RWGPS Chair and put all these routes to work for him: Syosset to Port Washington,  Mattituck, Sag Harbor, Poughkeepsie and Vermont. The beauty of his travels is that all these routes are in the HBC Library.

A Message from the VP, John Greene

I hope everyone is enjoying this winter and keeping fit for the upcoming 2023 riding season.

Even though official rides have ended for the winter, the Executive Board has been hard at work discussing innovative ways to improve the Huntington Bicycle Club. I am happy to announce that Larry Denbaum will be stepping up to take over the duties and responsibilities of Ride Chairman in order to allow me, as Vice President, to focus on other issues and responsibilities this upcoming season.

Larry is an experienced ride leader with an enthusiasm for cycling. He brings a vision of expanding ridership with a diverse ride calendar for all levels, including additional remote start locations each and every weekend.

However, Smith Street in Greenlawn WILL REMAIN OUR PRIMARY AND PREFERRED start location for weekends and holidays.

In addition, Larry is currently our Ride With GPS administrator. He is adept at planning, sharing, archiving and downloading RWGPS routes and is looking forward to assisting anyone who has questions on how to use Ride With GPS.

Over the past ten years it has been my pleasure and honor to act on your behalf as HBC Ride Chairman.

Let's all welcome Larry Denbaum as our next Ride Chairman and get ready for the 2023 season which starts Saturday, April 1st!

John Greene

Vice President

Huntington Bicycle Club

A Message from Larry Denbaum, the new Ride Chairman

I am looking forward to working with all of the great HBC Ride leaders and riders to help organize great rides for all levels. It’s not just posting rides, but posting rides that have been thoughtfully planned.

If you have ideas for rides, I would be more than happy to help with the planning.

Starting this year there will be more flexibility on creating rides and start locations.

Smith Street will always be an integral starting location, but when it makes sense, other start locations can be used including Breezy Park which is a great location to start from when riding west.

Here's to helping out our club with having more rides and rider turnout in 2023
